Priesthood

Pauli Murray Episcopal Priest

Ordained Episcopal Priest Pauli Murray in her office

  • Pauli Murray was one of the first women and the first Black women to be ordained as a priest in the Episcopal Church
  • Murray was the great-grandaughter of a slave and officiated service in the same parish where her ancestors were baptized
  • She carried out the Holy Eucharist in UNC's Chapel of the Cross
  • Though she was forced to retire in 1982 because the Episcopal Church requires retirement at seventy-two years of age, Murray continued to serve hospitalized and immobile people
