Priesthood
- Pauli Murray was one of the first women and the first Black women to be ordained as a priest in the Episcopal Church
- Murray was the great-grandaughter of a slave and officiated service in the same parish where her ancestors were baptized
- She carried out the Holy Eucharist in UNC's Chapel of the Cross
- Though she was forced to retire in 1982 because the Episcopal Church requires retirement at seventy-two years of age, Murray continued to serve hospitalized and immobile people
