"Mrs. Ruby Hurley, The Most Militant Negro Woman in the South"
In this 1955 Jet magazine article, Ruby Hurley is shown in a radical light. She was a role model to many, as she helped to raise the NAACP’s membership. The article has its flaws because it is dated. Consequently, the largest paragraph reflects on Hurley's attractive looks. In an article about militancy, looks simply should not matter, woman or not. As the NAACP's Southeastern Regional Director, Hurley was able to plan to make a true change in the way the NAACP operates. She would be reachable at all times to help the community. Because Hurley was reachable by people who needed help from the NAACP, she also received backlash. With hate mail, she received threats of all sorts but this did not deter her pursuits. This issue of Jet magazine was important not only because of Ruby Hurley's positive portrayal as a woman leader of the NAACP but also as a feature article where her photo is on the front cover of the magazine. Jet was published weekly and was a major influence on the Black community. Each family who received their weekly Jet had access to reading about Hurley’s work. Hurley’s radicalism was able to make waves in the NAACP as well as popular culture.
